Chapter twenty

BELLE

The hospital is billowing with black smoke as I race away into the waning evening.

What the hell did Dean Stiffdick bomb it with, the pyro?

Coming around one corner of the burning building, I spy a small aircraft waiting where helicopters normally land. The thing looks too small to fit five people, let alone the shit-ton we need to cram in there—but if I can fit three dicks in my vag and one in my ass at the same time, I’m sure we can make this virgin-like hole work. Sprinting back to the girls, I wave them over. Another time, it might be comical to watch the women rush the bassinet-like strollers while still trying to be quiet for the babies, but today’s not that day.

As soon as they catch up to me, we run to the plane. I wince when a man leaps down from the open doorway, clearing the steps up, a gun in his hand.

I ready my arms to turn into a tentacle to lash out at him, but Sian yells, “Password!”

In a stoic voice, he says, “Satin butt holes.”

I look back at Sian, disturbed. This is the second time I've heard that, but apparently it's the magic words because Sian scoops up Gryffin, and nods at Elise and the other women to grab the babies.

“Let's get them on board!” The petite, but fierce titmouse hollers, and I adore her even more.

At the same time, I hear another shout. It’s Jude, his arms laden with one of the moms. He’s followed by Harry, Theo, and Arthur.

“Get on the plane!” Jude commands. “We have to go now. The Tershes are closing in on us.”

“Where are Jack and Nestor?” I cry.

“Jack went back to get him. They'll be here in a second,” Theo soothes, cradling two women.

I don’t care what the man thinks—he’s a fucking beast and a total hero. Making a mental note to tell him this when things have settled waaaaaaaaay the fuck down, I sway from side to side, unsure of what to do. The girls are already inside the plane, even the three human nurses, and Arthur is climbing up the steps with the mom he’s holding. Behind him, Harry starts up, and then Theo. Only Jude pauses as I anxiously will Jack and Nestor to appear.

“Sir, we need to take off now.” This comes from the password man who’s talking to Jude.

I assume he’s the pilot or the co-pilot. Then again, I also get a James Bond vibe from the dude and wonder if he’s with the British government.

Are humans teaming up with shifters to help fight these assholes?

“Just one more second,” I plead.

“Nestor's got this,” Jude reassures. “He's one of the most dangerous Tershes there are.”

“Yeah—in water!” I screech.

“You trusted him before to protect you, and nothing’s changed. Nestor can swim back to Scotland with Jack, but he’ll get back there, I promise. Right now, we need to get these mums and babies to safety.”

Intellectually, I know he’s right, but I hate the idea of us being separated again.
